World Cup Now: Iran win takes pressure off USA

Iran picked up a second Group B win on Friday when batting Wales 2-0 with two goals in extra time. A draw would have been the more favorable result for the United Statesbut is an Iran win still good news for Gregg Berhalter’s side?

Former USMNT players and “World Cup Now” hosts Jimmy Conrad and Sacha Kljestan look on.

It doesn’t matter, really, what the United States does against England whether they get a little help from England against Wales or beat Iran directly. It’s still a big question, of course. We still have to go out and see how we will play. I don’t even want to put it around, but if it’s not good for us against England, we can’t lose much.

Iran will not be a pushover against the United States. They will go into that match knowing that maybe just one point to them could get them through to the next round. He poses a threat, for sure.

And now after watching this match too, after the game against Wales and Wales being quite aggressive in the second half against USA, we thought, ‘OK, maybe a draw was a fair result.’

But now I think they might regret that outcome. Iran are good, they are better than we thought when we saw them play against England. This is the team that we saw in qualifying, this is the team that I think has been together in recent years. They fight together, they stay together, they play hard.
