Woman dies in Indiana house explosion, officials say


A woman died Wednesday morning after a house exploded in northwestern Indiana, officials say.

Officials said the explosion occurred at a house at 600 in East 29 New Chicago Avenue just before 11:30 am on Wednesday.

Witnesses reported hearing at least two explosions, the second of which apparently caused the house to collapse.

One witness said neighbors tried to help a woman inside the building, but were unable to rescue her before the second explosion.

“A woman came to the door and she caught fire, so an elderly gentleman and his wife went to the door,” said one witness. because there was another explosion and the house fell on her.”

The cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and the Indiana Fire Brigade is on the scene. NIPSCO firefighters and utility workers are also in the area working to determine the cause.
