I was not interested in dolls as a child and took offense at the idea of a propaganda doll to convince me that I wanted to be a sex object when I grew up. So I especially missed the popular culture around Barbie, even though it’s not possible to have lived in America for the last sixty years and not be aware of Barbie.
I was baffled by the hype around the film, or even why one would be made. But, in preparation for this post, I watched the trailer. I think I’m beginning to understand it now, even if it’s fraught with the cynicism that, like those high heels, I never wanted to grow up in.
