“Bigger planes are a net benefit for O’Hare: It means lower emissions, less runway congestion and added safety,” says Joe Schwieterman, a DePaul University professor and transportation expert. “Parking RJs frees up resources to expand into new markets.” 

United and American declined to discuss their route and capacity plans at O’Hare, but both carriers have been adding new destinations.
