Mariupol, a city in eastern Ukraine, remains encircled by Russian troops. The situation is so bad that the city has officially declared a humanitarian disaster. Residents do not have access to water, electricity and heat, and Russian troops are constantly shooting at public buildings and residential estates. Local officials said on Sunday that there were 22 Russian bomb attacks in the last 24 hours (until 10 a.m. EST).

“So far, 2,187 inhabitants of Mariupol have died as a result of Russian attacks,” the city council said. This is a sharp increase compared to the recently announced data, as nearly 1,600 victims were reported earlier.

“The situation in Mariupol is still very difficult. The city has no electricity, water, heat, almost no communication, food and water are running out,” said officials.

City officials accuse the Russian forces and the separatist militia that support them of “deliberately shooting at residential areas”.

Kherson protests

There were protests against Russia’s actions on Sunday in Kherson. Demonstrators waved Ukrainian flags, chanted anti-Russian slogans and shouted curses at Putin.

Manifestations are a reaction to reports of a possible the creation of another republic after Lugansk and Donetsk controlled by Moscow.

If the information about the Kremlin’s plans towards Kherson were to be confirmed, this move would reflect Moscow’s policy of destabilizing Ukraine. Kyiv considers the separatist regions – the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic – to be occupied by Russia. Their recognition by Vladimir Putin was a pretext to launch an invasion of Ukraine.
