Authorities said two people were killed in a fire at an apartment building in Vernon Hills early Sunday morning.
Firefighters responded to an apartment complex fire alarm around 3:15 a.m. at Block 900 South Court in Shorewood, fire officials said.
As the crew began to respond to the scene, a 911 call received by first responders revealed that people may have been trapped inside, officials said.
Upon arriving, firefighters put out the fire and began searching for people when two adults were inside.
One was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center where he died. The identity of the deceased is currently unknown.
Fire officials have confirmed that the building is now uninhabitable and that the Red Cross is working to assist those who have evacuated, but it is unclear how many residents have been displaced by the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
