New Cubs first baseman Trey Mancini tracked down White Sox closer Liam Hendricks’ phone number when he learned he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

On Hendriks’ first day of treatment, Mancini, a cancer survivor, reached out to say, “If you need any advice, I’m here.”

“Various chemotherapy,” Mancini, 30, said Monday. “But at the same time, it doesn’t feel ideal every time you go through it. I wanted you to

At a virtual press conference, the Cubs introduced Mancini, who has signed a two-year, $14 million guaranteed deal. . But it was clear that the Cubs also appreciated Mancini’s off-field reputation.

Mancini was named the 2021 Comeback Player of the Year after battling Stage 3 colon cancer the previous year. He now says his leg strength going into that season was “far nowhere near” what it was before surgery and six months of chemotherapy, but he still hits 21 homers in 2021. I hit

Mancini spent his entire career with the Orioles, an eighth-round draft pick in 2013, before joining the Astros in a three-team trade at the deadline last year. 176 with eight home runs in 186 at-bats for them.

“I handled it all well,” he said. “Unfortunately he slumped at the wrong time and picked up some bad habits mechanically at the plate. It was great to win the World Series, and in the end I was able to contribute to that.”

In Game 5 of the World Series, Mancini stepped in when Astros first baseman Yuri Gurriel collided on a base pass. In Game 6, he had his first hit of the playoffs.

Now he’s brought these lessons to the Cubs team and is out of rebuilding.

“Experience is important at this level,” said Mancini. “When I was a rookie, I asked all the veterans who were on the team for advice – Mark Trumbo, Adam Jones, Chris Davis, JJ Hardy. It really helped me grow as a player.”

Mancini’s status as a veteran joining the new team also reassessed his commitment to Team Italia for this spring’s World Baseball Classic.

“When you’re around a new team and you want to get to know them, it’s often important to be there all spring.” It’s my fault that I didn’t hold back until I found out.”

The Cubs added two veteran first basemen this offseason in Mancini and Eric Hosmer. Mancini emphasized his ability to play as a corner outfielder and also as a designated hitter. I said I said

During the offseason, Mancini reverted to a mid-range approach at bat and focused on not pulling the ball too far. That’s what he realized he got away with last season.

“Before passing [fighting cancer]The baseball slump was the biggest problem I ever faced in my life,” he said. “Luckily I would say that was the biggest issue I had. But it puts a lot of things into perspective.”

Still, his enthusiasm and willingness to work has not changed.

“But it makes me understand what the real problem is, what the baseball problem is,” he said. “And you can go through any of them.”
