For Kyla Ray, operations manager of the Development Services Center, maintaining the American flag at a tucked-away location in west Champaign is a “labor of love,” she said. “When we were moving to this location in 2005, one of our main requirements was to have a flag pole here.”

DSC is September’s recipient of Champaign American Legion Post 24’s monthly award for proper display of the flag. Old Glory isn’t on a main thoroughfare — 3102 W. Clark Road — but still has Ray’s full attention.

Post 24’s Chuck Zelinsky said that kind of devotion made his organization “proud to have selected them.”

October’s winner will be announced Sunday during Ann Rhoton’s “Standard Time” on WDWS 1400-AM (6-10 a.m.).
