Some Holiday Specials to Stream This December

The nights are long, the air is crisp, the Christmas lights are on – it’s time to curl up in your home with a cup of cocoa, a cookie and some merry Christmas treats. We’ve rounded up a few favorites that are available to stream Passport WTTW members, from concerts to holiday episodes of our dramas and mysteries. And don’t forget we also have a holiday planning list on air throughout the month, in case you prefer to let us choose what to watch!

Frank Sinatra

We have two separate vacation specials, a decade apart. First, he appears with Bing Crosby in a 1957 special directed by Sinatra himself. Then he and his family join Dean Martin and his family in 1967 for another evening of songs and merriment.

Ella wishes you a rousing Christmas with Vanessa Williams

This concert may be from 2020, but it also recalls the Sinatra era, being a tribute to the beloved 1960 album She wishes you a mesmerizing Christmas by Ella Fitzgerald. This modern version features Vanessa Williams and other contemporary artists.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra: Ghosts of Christmas Eve

Another concert extracted from the archives is this one Rock opera from 1999 of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra with Jewel, Ossie Davis and Michael Crawford.

The Nutcracker and the Mouse King

This is another musical special featuring a holiday story, this time with a traditional orchestra. Based on the original book by ETA Hoffmann that inspired Tchaikovsky’s inevitable ballet, the concert features Alan Cumming narrating the story.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s annual holiday concert also usually features an actor alongside musical performances, and we’ve got three recent releases, plus a twenty-year retrospective, for you to enjoy. Hugh Bonneville and Sutton Foster were the stars in 2018; Kristin Chenoweth took the lead in 2019; Kelli O’Hara and Richard Thomas have appeared in 2020 version filmed in 2019; and Brian Stokes Mitchell hosted a look back at numerous highlights.

College and university performances

Some of the most popular annual holiday concerts come from colleges and universities, and we have several available to stream. There is one from St. Olaf in Minnesota, two from Belmont in Tennessee and one from Wheaton outside Chicago.

Straight No Chaser: the 25th anniversary

The a cappella group Straight No Chaser was formed at a college (Indiana) before becoming nationally acclaimed. This anniversary celebration it is holiday themed.

Pasquale Esposito: In the spirit of Christmas

Tenor Pasquale Esposito brings Christmas cheer and visions of a warmer climate to this special from Naples, which features both music and dance.

Call the midwife

As an introduction to the most recent Call the midwife holiday special broadcasting on December 25 at 8pm on WTTW, the four most recent holiday specials are available for streaming for a limited time! Also, we have summarizes tell them if you need to catch up.

All creatures great and small

Instead Call the midwife seasons start with a special holiday, seasons of All creatures great and small finish with one. With a new season on the way in January, this is the perfect time to revisit the Yorkshire Dales! Again, we have summarizes.

Grantchester

Season 3 of Grantchester also started with a episode set for Christmas. (Sidney was still the vicar.) We have a recap if you need help following the mystery.

Victory

Season 2 of Victory wrapped with Albert introducing Christmas traditions from his home in Germany to England. You can too recap that episode.

Maria Berry

Mary Berry must love the holidays, because she’s given us several special offers. There is Country house at Christmas as well as two episodes of it Absolute favourites. (There is also Mary Berry’s Last Christmasnot yet available for streaming, which one goes on air on December 19 WTTW at 9:00 p.m.)

The American Test Kitchen

There are some holiday-focused episodes of The American Test Kitchen currently available for streaming, focusing on party eggs (think eggnog), desserts and saladsAnd Jewish pastry (for Hanukkah). There is also a one hour special.

New Scandinavian kitchen

There are two episodes of New Scandinavian kitchen during the holidays and Both of them I am available for streaming. (All nine seasons of the show can be streamed by Passport members.)

How it rolls
