Romeoville police officer injured in shootout, man arrested

A Romeoville police officer was shot dead early Thursday morning during a shootout and a 29-year-old man was arrested after an hour-long search, police said.

At about 12:13 a.m., Romeoville police officers were searching a vehicle that had been reported stolen, and the man fled on foot when approached. A chase on foot ensued and officers engaged in a shootout with the suspect, according to a Romeoville Police Department news release.

Shortly after 12:15 a.m., a police officer was shot in the shoulder near the intersection of Sierra Trail and Somerville Drive and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. The policeman’s condition was not immediately clear.

Residents were asked to evacuate the area while the search for armed suspects took place.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted and one person was taken into police custody.

Police said charges were pending.
