URBANA — A Champaign man who robbed a man in Campustown of his wallet about a month ago has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Zachary Overman, 30, who has no permanent address, was also ordered to get a substance-abuse evaluation.

Overman pleaded guilty before Judge Randy Rosenbaum to robbery, admitting that on Oct. 6, he took the wallet of a 24-year-old man after hitting him in the head in the 500 block of East Green Street in Champaign.

University of Illinois police had been called to what was described as a fight, but the victim, who was intoxicated, was unable to say exactly what happened.

Video showed Overman attacking the man, throwing him to the ground and kicking him in the head until bystanders intervened.

In exchange for his guilty plea, a second incident of aggravated battery alleging he hit a man while in the downtown Urbana parking garage on Oct. 22 was dismissed.

Court records show Overman has previous convictions for resisting a peace officer, aggravated battery, theft, and domestic battery.
