Illinois, Chicago (CP)  — Authorities arrested a 22-year-old man identified as a person of interest in the shooting Monday afternoon that killed at least six people, wounded 30 others and sent hundreds fleeing a parade for the Independence of the United States in a suburb of Chicago.

Police previously said that Robert E. Crimo III should be considered armed and dangerous.

The local police chief, Lou Jogmen, indicated that the citizen was arrested on Monday night “without incident” after a brief pursuit. The reason for the event is not yet known.

“We are going to have to connect (the detainee) with the crime scene, we want to follow the proper process,” Jogmen said.

Jogmen explained to reporters that Crimo will now be questioned by police to determine his connection to the shooting and that, if all goes smoothly, there will be no further press updates until tomorrow.

“Unless something significant happens tonight, we’re going to let the process continue,” the policeman said.

Even so, Jogmen wanted to make it very clear that this does not mean that the investigation is over, since they are still collecting information about the event, and asked any individual with videos or data of interest to contact the authorities.

“We are encouraged to have a person of interest in custody, but, again, we will continue to attend to everything that comes to us,” said the local police chief.

After the authorities identified the young man and released his name, they indicated that he was driving a silver Honda vehicle and that he came from the area, although they did not clarify if he is from Highland Park or a nearby town.

“Everyone disperse, please. It is not safe to be here,” the police asked those present. (The Associated Press)

“We have a large number of federal, state and local agents working to apprehend this person,” one of the local police officials said during a press conference.

On Monday morning, a young man opened fire from a nearby rooftop on the crowd gathered to enjoy a parade for the 4th of July in the town of Highland Park, near Chicago, killing six people and injuring at least to another 24.

A witness said she heard a loud sound that she thought was fireworks, until she heard people yelling about a shooter. (The Associated Press)

So far this year there have been 310 mass shootings – those involving four or more people, in addition to the shooter – in the United States.
