Olympic champion Nuis wins 1500 meters in Heerenveen
HeereNVEEN (ANP) – Speed skater Kjeld Nuis has won the 1500 meters at the World Cup final in Heerenveen. The reigning Olympic champion at this distance came to 1.43.48 in front of the massive crowd in Thialf. Nuis was narrowly ahead of Thomas Krol (1.43.79). Canadian Connor Howe was third with 1.44.39.
Nuis extended his title in the 1500 meters at the Beijing Games with a time of 1.43.21. He also stayed ahead of the reigning world champion Krol, who had to settle for silver. Just like in that match, Krol was faster halfway through, but Nuis took the win with a better final lap.
For Nuis it was the second victory this weekend. On Saturday he also defeated Krol in the 1000 meters. At that distance, Nuis was unable to defend his 2018 Olympic title. Krol became his successor in Beijing.
