Officials say 6 cars collide on South Side, 2 dead, 10 injured

Two people were killed and 10 were hospitalized in a major car accident on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday night, officials said.

Police said the clash occurred at 5 p.m. at South Cottage Grove Avenue and East 87th Street, an intersection near the Chatham neighborhood. Paramedics needed at least 10 ambulances to respond to the crash, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt.

“Obviously there was very high speed involved,” he said, adding that six cars appeared to have been involved in the crash.

Merritt said two people were confirmed dead at the scene. Of his 10 people who were taken to the hospital, 4 were in serious or critical condition.

“I’ve had men, women, and children, and I’ve been to different hospitals,” Merritt said.

One car was overturned and another “completely collapsed” in the fire, Merritt said.

“I’ve seen a lot of accidents that I’ve never seen before,” he said.
