Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant
At the end of February, the State Security Council discussed the safety characteristics and guarantees for the tender for the contractor for the construction of the new unit. The government agreed on March 2 that the Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela (for STAN) would take the necessary steps to announce the tender.
Síkela stated at the time that the current units of the Dukovany power plant needed to be disconnected in 2045 at the latest. The approval should take about two and a half years.
Last September, President Miloš Zeman signed a so-called low-carbon law. Among other things, it envisages, through security guarantees, that only technologies from suppliers from countries that have acceded to the International Government Procurement Agreement of 1996 will be used for construction. Russia and China, which were these states do not belong.
Applicants for the construction of a new unit in Dukovany include the French company EDF, the South Korean KHNP and the North American Westinghouse.
The Prime Minister has previously stated that the evaluation of the tender should be completed by the end of 2024. The issuance of a building permit is expected in 2029. According to him, the trial operation must be launched in 2036.
The Czechia currently has six nuclear power plants in two power plants. Two units, each with an output of approximately 1000 megawatts (MW), are in Temelín, South Bohemia. Four smaller units with an output of 510 MW are located in Dukovany.
