ROYAL — Thursday was maiden voyage day for the district’s two new 71-passenger electric buses, which arrived in Royal this week.
Prairieview-Ogden, Hoopeston Area and Westville were among 15 districts statewide selected to share in $965 million awarded across the country from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Program rebate competition.
PVO’s grant was for $790,000. Its two buses will be used only for routes, given that they’re limited to 100 miles on a full charge, Superintendent Jeff Isenhower said.
The new wheels replace two diesel-guzzling buses, which Isenhower said got around seven miles to the gallon and traveled routes between 24 and 58 miles in length.
“So doing a rough estimation, we are not going to be burning around 19 gallons of diesel per day for those two routes,” he said.
