New Area Codes Introduced in Southern Illinois, Affecting Nearly 40 Counties

Illinois officials say new area codes will be introduced in the southern part of the state, affecting more than 35 counties starting in the new year.

According to a press release from the Illinois Commission of Commerce, the areas affected by the new numbers now use the 618 area code, effectively covering the state from the Missouri border to the Indiana border. It covers the south third.

Officials say the supply of phone numbers available in existing area codes will soon be “depleted.” This means that new lines added to this area will be given the 730 area code instead.

These numbers will start appearing on July 7, 2023.

In all, parts of 37 counties were affected, and affected communities include Alton, Carbondale, East St. Louis, Edwardsville, and Marion.

Call rates and service areas will remain unchanged with the area code superimposed, and current phone numbers will remain unchanged, officials said.

Several new area codes have been added across the state in recent years. Earlier this year, the Illinois Commission of Commerce approved the implementation of a 464 area code overlaying the existing 708 area code areas in northeastern Illinois.

Late last year, the ICC also added a new 861 area code, overriding the existing 309 area code for the western part of the state.

Similar “overlays” have occurred with the 815 and 847 area codes for the Chicago area.Coding to stakeholders.

For more information on new area codes, I found it on the ICC website.
