After delays and disappointments, NASCAR’s big weekend ended on a high note. The main event, Grant Park 220, rolled through the streets of Chicago after a record amount of rain it looked like it would postpone the event.

Driver Shane van Gisbergen was victorious in Sunday’s main event, which was cut from 100 laps to 75, after a late start gave them limited race time.

Saturday’s race, Xfinity Loop 121, was abandoned due to inclement weather, with plans to complete the 55-lap event on Sunday morning. But after persistent rain and “standing water and flooding,” the race was on canceled altogether. Driver Cole Custer, who led 25 laps on Saturday, was declared the winner.

Most of the weekend’s concerts were also cancelled, including Saturday’s headliner The Chainsmokers, and Sunday’s scheduled performances by Charley Crockett and Miranda Lambert.

Despite many fan disappointments, some NASCAR devotees said they were used to dealing with bad weather.

“It feels like it’s not NASCAR unless it’s raining,” said Timothy Alguire, who drove with his brother from the Quad Cities for the race. Chicago Sun Times.

Another poncho-wearing fan, Margaret Kanakos of upstate New York, said: “It happens. It’s not the first rain we’ve had in NASCAR.
