While traveling on the 1400 block of the Munster Police Officer Ridge Road, he observed a violator traveling west at high speed and getting in and out of traffic.

The officer made a U-turn on Ridge Road and attempted to catch the violator.

Police reported that in the Ridge Road and Beech Avenue area, a pickup truck making a left turn from eastbound Ridge Road to Beech Avenue collided with a police patrol vehicle. The officer patrol vehicle stopped on the south side of the Ridge and Greenwood.

The officer had to get out of his vehicle due to the concrete wall on the driver’s side and the collision with the truck and the NIPSCO pole.

Nearly more than 12 firefighters and paramedics labored for more than 30 minutes to save him from the wreckage. The police officer, who was taken to the State Hospital and treated, was discharged from the hospital the same day. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured in the accident.

The Munster Police Department has requested the Indiana State Police to conduct an investigation into the accident as it was a duty accident. The investigation is still ongoing.
