A man in southern Illinois has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing a backhoe to drive about 16 miles to the airport to catch a flight, officials said.

The backhoe owner soon arrived at the airport and confirmed the equipment belonged to his company, according to the sheriff’s office. The machine was typically used to move large pieces of debris and was parked at the work site, the owner said.
