A man was shot dead by police in Des Plaines on Wednesday night.

Police said in a statement that officers were dispatched to a residence on Block 1400 of Tucker Street to assist firefighters and encountered a man who was “destroying things and may be insane.” .

Police said the man was Scott MacDonald, 55, who may have had an ax or a machete. “The situation escalated [the officers] An unexpected encounter with Mr McDonald in the common hallway of the building resulted in police shooting,” police said.

Police said McDonald was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the officers involved in the shooting were on paid leave in accordance with department policy.

No further details were revealed.
