Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain said a man he believed police were involved in a carjacking in Aurora was killed in a shootout with police in Geneva after a chase that began in South Elgin Wednesday afternoon. bottom.
In the incident, police said they saw a man with a handgun, and a Kane County Sheriff’s Department police dog also died after being dispatched.
Authorities said the man who was shot was alleged to have carjacked a Honda Accord in Aurora around 1:57 p.m., after a sheriff’s deputy said the vehicle was found using a license plate reader in South Elgin. was done.
Hein said police officers tried to stop traffic, but the car did not stop. Sheriffs then began the chase in the South Elgin area and ended at Geneva’s Randall Road and Fabian Parkway, where sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle.
At that point, the man got out of the car and “showed the sheriffs his weapon,” sheriffs said. Police dog Hudson was called out and got into a “fierce fight” with a man, officials said.
A shootout ensued, during which a man and a police dog were shot dead, Hein said.
The man was later pronounced dead at the Northwestern Medical Delnoy Hospital in Geneva. Authorities have not yet released the man’s name or age.
A police dog also died from its wounds.
The investigation into the case will be turned over to the Kane County Serious Crimes Task Force.
