URBANA — A man who admitted to police that he robbed a Savoy restaurant last week is in the Champaign County jail.
Lt. Curt Apperson said Devante Derrickson, 21, who listed no permanent address, was arrested Thursday in Danville by members of the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and detectives from his office.
Derrickson was charged Wednesday with aggravated robbery for allegedly holding up a clerk at the Subway, 1319 N. Dunlap Ave., about 8:40 p.m. Sept. 21. The restaurant is in the Savoy Plaza just north of Curtis Road along U.S. 45.
Apperson said detectives used automated license-plate readers to identify the car used by the robber, which led them to Derrickson.
They obtained a search warrant for a residence on Tillman Avenue in Danville where he was staying. Deputies recovered an AirSoft gun, clothes, shoes and a mask consistent with what the robber was wearing when he entered the sandwich shop.
Apperson said Derrickson confessed to holding up the store.
Aggravated robbery, which alleges use of a gun not capable of firing bullets, is a Class 1 felony carrying potential penalties ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison.
