In 1997, a Massachusetts fifth grader wrote a letter, placed it into a bottle and dropped it into the Atlantic Ocean as part of a school assignment. Now in his mid-30s, he finally heard back.

The message that Ben Lyons tossed into the Cape Cod peninsula was found this August just 3,300 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in France.

“Dear Beachcomber, Thank you for being kind enough to pick up my bottle,” Lyons wrote. “We are studying ocean currents in science class. We dropped these bottles in Nantucket Sound in October 1997. If you could please fill out the question and return to us.”

And while the letter was sent back to the U.S., its journey was not quite over. Find out how the story unfolded in the link in bio.
