Drivers in Illinois have only one week left to hold off on renewing their license or ID card during the pandemic.
After multiple extensions of expired IDs over the past two years, the final deadline has been set for Thursday, December 1st.
Expiring soon applies to driver’s licenses, ID cards, and permits, but not to commercial driver’s licenses or CDL learner’s permits.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White initially extended the renewal period due to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, and has since announced several more extensions.
However, the restricted driver license expiration dates only included those with an expiration date between December 1, 2021 and December 1, 2022.
Separately, the federal deadline for obtaining a Real ID is set for May 3, 2023.
The Office of the Secretary of State encourages people to complete the renewal process online if possible, but drivers have the option to visit a facility instead. You can book an appointment with one or visit us in person.
Some larger facilities may require reservations, the secretary of state’s office said.
