Illinois Department of Transportation continues to place structural steel on the Interstate 57/Interstate 74 overpass redevelopment project in west Champaign. Ken Crawford, project implementation engineer, said the steel work continues intermittently overnight, which necessitates the closure of Interstate 57. He projected the steel work will be completed by April. Crawford said crews will continue dirt work at the site as long as they can until the ground freezes, typically around Thanksgiving. “I anticipate they’ll start pouring of the bridge deck probably in June of next year,” Crawford said. “They won’t be able to do that over the winter.”
