Known by many as the birthplace of the Italian beef sandwich, Chicago couldn’t help but celebrate National Italian Beef Day.

Paying tribute to the city’s beloved culinary hymn, officials announced Saturday plans to distribute more than 500 Al’s Beef Italian beef sandwiches for free.

The giveaway will run from 11:30am to 2:00pm at the Chicago Food Stop, 875 N. Michigan Avenue, until supplies last.

The event continues until 6pm with other festivities, including live DJs, tastings and product demonstrations by local businesses, book talks and a showcase of the comedy special “Where’s the Beef.”

In addition to the Chicago event, Buona, which instituted the holiday in 2017, will offer customers Italian beef or beefless sandwiches (with one free topping) on ​​May 27 through the Buona app.
