Hayden Wesneski gets spot in Cubs rotation originally appeared nbc sports chicago
one of the biggest competitions in chicago cubsThe Spring Training roster came to a conclusion as Hayden Wesneski claimed the fifth and final spot in the team’s rotation.
Cubs manager David Ross officially announced the news at a press conference on Saturday as the team put the finishing touches on its 26-man roster.
“He knows this is just the beginning of something bigger,” Ross told the media. Including Marquee Sports Network.
Wesneschi was one of three pitchers to compete for the spot, beating out Javier Assad and Adrian Sampson. Assad is still on the team’s roster, but Sampson was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Saturday.
Wesneski went 3-1 in 5 games this spring with a 2.12 ERA and a team-high 22 strikeouts in 17 innings. He allowed a batting average against .203.
He joins a Cubs rotation that already includes Justin Steele, Drew Smiley, Jameson Tyrone and Marcus Stroman.
Kyle Hendricks continues to rehab a shoulder injury that ended his season last July, so he could return to the rotation early in the season.
