Gary police shooting kills armed man during SWAT situation, officials say


Gary, Indiana (WLS) — Officials in Gary said police officers were involved in the Tuesday night shooting.

According to the Indiana State Police, the incident occurred on the 1500 block of Chase Street in Gary.

Gary Police said officers were called to a house on the block in a domestic situation involving a family member. A man in his 40s was armed with a rifle and had barricaded himself inside the house, police said.

The family was able to escape safely and the SWAT team was called.

The armed man came out of the house, got into the car and was confronted by SWAT officers. Gary Police said the man was shot dead.

No one else was hurt.

Gary Police said the officer involved in the shooting will be on leave while the investigation is ongoing. Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting.
