Evanston police are investigating after a 13-year-old boy brought a gun to a middle school on Monday.
Police said they were called around 11 a.m. to Shute Middle School on Block 1400 in Oakton for “handguns recovered from students.”
An initial investigation revealed that the student had shown the pistol to another student. A student then alerted school officials about the gun, who eventually “recovered the loaded handgun without incident,” police said.
A 13-year-old student from Evanston was taken into custody and transferred to the local police station for further investigation.
The school was placed on a soft lockdown during the incident, but that lockdown was later lifted.
Police said the investigation so far “has not revealed any credible threats to other students or school officials,” but the investigation is ongoing and is in the “early stages.”
“We thank the Chute team, the district emergency response team, and the Evanston Police Department for their thoughtful response in handling this matter with the utmost urgency and care. We are also grateful to the students who have pushed us forward,” Evanston said. / Skokie School District 65 said in a statement. “We know how upsetting this situation is for our students, staff, families, and all members of our community. We have set up a crisis response team in Chute, and the Chute team will also gather students by grade level this afternoon to discuss and process what happened.”
