Borrowers have been off the hook from making payments since early 2020, just after the pandemic started. Proponents say it has enabled many to start families and buy first homes, or to cover the rising costs of housing, food and other basic needs.
Illinois residents have $61.6 billion in student debt, according to the Education Data Initiative. That equates to more than $37,000 per borrower. More than 1.5 million borrowers in Illinois were banking on debt relief through President Joe Biden’s federal student loan forgiveness program. But it was overturned by the Supreme Court last month.
