CHICAGO — A Chicago man drove a stolen Land Rover to River North Walgreens on Monday afternoon, prosecutors say. A 2019 Land Rover Discovery was reported stolen from O’Hare International Airport earlier in the day.
Chicago police responded to Walgreens at 641 North Clark after a 911 caller reported a driver crashed into the store around 4:45 p.m. driver, the prosecutor said.
In a media statement, Chicago Police said Thomas drove the SUV to the storefront “multiple times.” Prosecutors said Thomas admitted to crashing the Land Rover into the store.
He has been charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, vandalism, and driving with a suspended license.
The assistant public defender, who claimed the case was a “traffic violation,” said Thomas was homeless but had “strong ties to the community.”
Thomas was convicted in 2010 of battery deterioration due to firearm discharge. Officials said the case was reduced from attempted murder. That same year, he was convicted of residential burglary.
Judge Barbara Dawkins told Thomas that by posting a $1,000 bail bond, he could go home and wait for his trial.
