2:18 PM UPDATE — CPD interim aide Fred Waller announced this afternoon that all active-duty police officers in the City of Chicago will cancel one day off this weekend and will be paid overtime for their work.


CHICAGO – An Indiana man was shot and critically injured this morning while sitting in his car in the Boystown neighborhood, according to Chicago police.

The shooting comes just hours after Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson suggested to the Chicago Police Department that he may not need to work overtime over Memorial Day weekend, which begins tomorrow night.

The 35-year-old victim was sitting in a black Chevrolet Malibu on the 500 block in West Melrose at around 1:41 a.m. when someone approached him and opened fire, police said. The victim rushed away from the scene and called for help from a passing CPD patrol car at the intersection of Broadway and Cornelia.
