SAN FRANCISCO — Cruise’s CEO announced Sunday that he would step down from the role.

“The last 10 years have been amazing and I am grateful to everyone who has helped Cruise along the way,” CEO and co-founder Kyle Vogt wrote in X. “The startup I launched in my garage has provided over 250,000 driverless rides worldwide.” different cities, and each trip inspires people with a little taste of the future.”

Vogt’s resignation comes less than a month after the autonomous car company suspended its driverless robotaxi operations nationwide. The pause came two days after California’s DMV suspended permits to conduct driverless testing in the state.

The suspension came due to an accident in October in which a Cruise robotaxi dragged a pedestrian who had been hit by another vehicle in San Francisco.

Cruise’s permit to test vehicles with safety drivers on board was not affected by the suspensions.

Cruise also recently announced the layoff of its contract employees who worked on the ride-hailing service’s fleet of autonomous vehicles.

The laid-off workers included support staff who cleaned, loaded and repaired robotaxis, as well as customer service workers.

The layoffs came after its fleet of vehicles was recalled for a software update, triggered by the same incident that saw its testing permit suspended.

Cruise, based in San Francisco, is a subsidiary of General Motors and also operates in Phoenix, Arizona, and the Texas cities of Austin and Houston.
