DEERFIELD, Ill. (CHI) — Caterpillar announced Tuesday that it will move its global headquarters from the northern suburb of Deerfield to Irving, Texas.
“We believe it is in the company’s strategic interest to make this decision, which supports Caterpillar’s profitable growth strategy as we help our customers build a better, more sustainable world,” said the president. -General Manager Jim Umpleby.
The company announced in 2017 that it would locate its global headquarters in Deerfield.
Caterpillar manufactures construction and mining equipment, off-road diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.
The company said Illinois would continue to have the highest concentration of Caterpillar employees in the world.
Deerfield Mayor Daniel Shapiro released a statement saying, “Since arriving in Deerfield in 2017, Caterpillar has been a good corporate citizen. We enjoyed our relationship with them and appreciate all they have done for our community. However, Caterpillar is no different from other companies. who are reassessing their space needs as we emerge from the pandemic. Our highly skilled workforce, access to transportation and being a great place to live – qualities that made Deerfield an attractive headquarters for Caterpillar in 2017 – remain the same. We’re disappointed to see them go, but I’m looking forward to some very exciting opportunities ahead.”
