Seven people were killed and one seriously injured in a shooting Monday afternoon at two mushroom farms in the city of Half Moon Bay.The suspect surrendered himself, officials said.
It was the second mass shooting in California in three days, and another just hours later.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was dispatched to the Magic Mushroom Farm following reports of the shooting that resulted in multiple casualties.
Deputies found four bodies with gunshot wounds, and a fifth victim, who also suffered gunshot wounds, was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
The sheriff’s office said the sheriff then rushed to the scene of a second nearby shooting, Concord Farm (also a mushroom farm), where three more bodies were found, according to the sheriff’s office.
It was not clear if the two farms were connected, but the suspect was described as a disgruntled employee who worked at one of them.
Half Moon Bay Deputy Mayor Joaquin Jimenez said the victims included Chinese and Latino farm workers.
Sometime late Monday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said media staging would take place at a substation between the two farms. Around 4:40 p.m., a man wearing a white baseball cap was handcuffed and taken out of the substation.

The suspect has been identified as 67-year-old Zhao Chun-Li, a resident of Half Moon Bay. The sheriff’s office said the weapon used in the shooting was found in his car.
Officials later said they believed the semi-automatic rifle was the only weapon used in the shooting, but it is unclear if it was obtained legally.
The Family Reunion Center that was set up was also used to provide shelter to families living in residences that were too close to crime scenes to return home.
