MARION, Illinois — A man in southern Illinois has been charged with theft after stealing a backhoe to drive about 16 miles to the airport to catch a flight, officials said.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, CCTV footage shows the Carbondale man riding a backhoe to the Southern Illinois Veterans Affairs Airport and leaving him in the airport parking lot. It is said that

According to the sheriff’s office, footage showed a man carrying a guitar case across the street from the parking lot into the airport lobby.

The backhoe owner soon arrived at the airport and confirmed the equipment belonged to his company, according to the sheriff’s office. The machine was typically used to move large pieces of debris and was parked at the work site, the owner said.
