At least two people were killed and 16 injured when a reportedly stolen speeding Dodge Charger caused a violent multi-vehicle wreck in Chicago Wednesday night, officials said. Among the injured were seven children.

The crash occurred in Chatham, Chicago’s South Side neighborhood around 5pm local time.

In a news briefing, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters that the Charger was going “very fast” and in the wrong direction when it collided with seven other vehicles. It immediately caught fire,” Brown said.

Both of the Charger’s two occupants died at the scene, Brown said. Their names were not immediately released.

Seven children and nine adults were hospitalized with unexplained injuries. Their terms were not provided.

Aerial footage of the CBS Chicago crash site showed several heavily damaged vehicles littering the road.

According to Brown, the Charger was reported stolen from the Chicago suburb of Markham earlier Wednesday.

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot told reporters that about 100 people have died in traffic accidents so far this year, “many of which are speed related.”

“This is a serious issue and we are doing everything we can,” said Lightfoot. “But people are determined to ignore speed limits. Frankly, there is little we can do other than be more aggressive about arresting and locking people up.”
