In 1923, the Urbana City Council adopted a special committee’s report favoring bus lines over further extension of electric lines for street cars.
In 1973, the Champaign City Council unanimously confirmed the final financial details of the downtown mall project, awarding a $784,800 contract ($5.3 million in today’s dollars) to Skoog Construction of Champaign and finalizing an agreement to pay two-thirds of the cost to replace a more-than-70-year-old sewer line beneath Neil Street.
In 2008, an estimated 200 people turned out to enjoy a picnic luncheon and attend the dedication of a new Looking for Lincoln wayside exhibit at the Bryant Cottage Historic Site in Bement. The dedication came just over two months before the state planned to close Bryant Cottage.
