In 1923, a man who robbed Charles Creek at gunpoint in his Main Street jewelry store was arrested within 40 minutes of the holdup. The crook ordered Creek to open the safe and hand over diamonds and other jewelry worth more than $2,000.

In 1973, the trial of Valerie Witzkowski, one of 39 people indicted in connection with a May 6, 1971, lllini Union sit-in protesting U.S. Marine Corps recruiting, was set to begin in Urbana. Witzkowski was charged with interference with a public institution of higher education for her part in the demonstration. If convicted, she could be fined up to $300 (about $2,200 in today’s dollars) or imprisoned in the county jail for up to 30 days — or both.

In 2008, Champaign teachers voted to ratify a new three-year contract that included raises of 4.5 percent per year for each of the next three years for most teachers, and increases beyond that for teachers with more than 21 years of experience.
