Today is Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023. Here are local news reports from 100, 50 and 15 years ago:

In 1923, roads leading into Urbana would soon be marked with signs directing drivers to the university, stadium and business districts. The signage was part of an effort by the Illinois State Highway Commission to complete the most efficient system of highway markings in the country.

In 1973, a group of University of Illinois faculty members and students said during a panel discussion that a number of comprehensive studies and personal experiences prove the UI was sexist in its hiring, admission, promotion and salary policies.

In 2008, a Fender Stratocaster autographed by band members of REO Speedwagon was auctioned off for $3,500. That, along with other items, raised more than $5,000 to benefit the children of Bill and Julie Orndorff, who were killed in an accident in July.
