Today is Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2023. Here are local news reports from 100, 50 and 15 years ago:

In 1923, the Urbana Lincoln hotel, Urbana’s new $375,000 civic project ($6.7 million in today’s dollars), was open for business. Mayor Crabtree of Jacksonville was the first guest and was assigned a room by manager Renner, who designated Mayor Smith to act as bell boy and show the first customer to his room.

In 1973, the Champaign-Urbana Committee on Community Standards on First Amendment Rights came one step closer to establishing a local standard for dealing with pornography as it scribbled out the tentative draft of the resolution it would send to the Champaign and Urbana city councils.

In 2008, University of Illinois student Logan Ponce, chosen the previous spring by former portrayers of Chief Illiniwek to be the 37th Chief Illiniwek, was to dance in a replica costume in the Assembly Hall the next month. University students were organizing an event called “The Next Dance” in conjunction with the Illini football game against Ohio State on Nov. 15.
