Crest Hills, IL (WLS) — At least three people were injured when a car crashed into a grocery store in Crest Hill on Tuesday.

Store employees said the car rammed in front of Food for Less on North Laken Avenue, slammed into the self-checkout area, and eventually stopped in the aisle.

The car hit several people in the store, including an elderly customer in the self-checkout area. The elderly customer and driver were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

At least one other person was treated at the scene, sources said.

A crash occurred while many families were shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, resulting in many families abandoning their carts.

Witness Victor Martinez said, “I was very shocked and nervous. ‘It went through the first two doors and it sounded like an explosion.'”

Witness Kathy Duffles said: “It was like a bomb went off and people were screaming and crying.

Ms Duffles said the driver crashed through the exit door as she and her grandson were trying to get through it. She said she saw one man being treated and another woman screaming.

“If I had gotten through that checkout line a little earlier, I would have been out those doors when the car rolled over,” she said.

“When I went to pick up my grocery cart, there were so many people in the store that there were almost no carts left. ” said Martinez.

Crest Hill police and fire officials have yet to comment on the incident. The store was closed that day and it was not immediately clear when it would reopen.
