Chicago (WLS) — Two people were killed in a horrific head-on collision on Chicago’s South Side Wednesday night, officials said.

Seven vehicles were involved in a collision near the intersection of 87th and Cottage Grove in Chatham.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said the black Dodge Charger was driving northbound in the southbound lane of Cottage Grove at “very high speed” around 5 p.m. I collided with a truck. The charger then stopped facing south and immediately caught fire, killing two people on board.

“This is a really bad crash,” said Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. “I’ve seen so many cases, and this is one of the worst.”

Langford said witnesses at the scene said the Charger was believed to have crashed in a chain reaction.

On Thursday morning, police said 10 people had been taken to hospital and were in good condition. Another he suffered one minor injury and was not taken to hospital. Police previously said 16 people were injured.

Three women, three men, five children, a 15-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy, a 6-year-old boy, a 4-year-old girl and a 10-month-old girl were taken to hospital, police said.

According to Brown, the Dodge Charger was reported stolen from Markham early Wednesday. A “long rifle-type firearm” was also found on the charger, Brown added.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot stopped at the scene and urged people to slow down.

“This is something we can control. Take your foot off the accelerator and follow the local speed limit,” the mayor said.

About 150 traffic-related deaths occurred in Chicago last year, and Lightfoot says there are already 100 deaths this year.

“A lot of them have to do with speed,” said Lightfoot. “When you’re driving fast, if you hit someone, whether it’s a car or a pedestrian, your survivability is greatly reduced.”

The Chicago Police Department’s Serious Accident Division is at the scene investigating the cause of the crash.
