Firefighters arrived at the scene and began to extricate the 29-year-old truck driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Chicago police and firefighters said.

“Norfolk Southern is aware of an accident involving a truck driver at our intermodal facility on 47th Street in Chicago Monday morning. Our thoughts are with their family and colleagues at this difficult time. We are working with first responders to fully investigate the incident,” Norfolk Southern said in a statement.

FedEx referred all questions about the incident to Norfolk Southern.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Occupational Health and Safety Administration did not return calls seeking comment. The Federal Railroad Administration said it would not investigate the crash because it did not meet the criteria for an investigation.

Fire officials had no further details.
